Whoopee, birthday boy (his b-day is today) John McCain handily won his primary bid this past Tuesday in Arizona over opponent and  former U.S. Congressman J.D. Hayworth.  Now to the general election in November and his future in the Republican Party which is anything but clear. He seems to be floundering, his stances on immigration and campaign finance have changed over the past few years. Once an advocate of spending limits in campaigns (remember the McCain-Feingold law) he spent more than 20 million to crush his primary challenger; and where did he get that money from? Immigration a hot issue in his home state of Arizona (S.B. 1070) has the old guy screaming “complete the danged fence.” Is this the same guy that teamed up with Senator Edward Kennedy in 2006  to pass reform legislation that included a path to legalization for illegal immigrants? McCain often called a “maverick” in the news media made it clear earlier this year that he’s never considered himself to be one( believable as long as you don’t look at any footage from town hall meetings when he was running for president). You almost feel sorry for the guy, once big on the national political stage and now relegated back to his state electorate. I’m sure he never thought that his legacy would just be “Arizona Senator John McCain.”
