I’ve always said this and I will continue to say it; the repeal of Don’t ask, Don’t tell (DADT) will probably never happen. It’s an ugly policy and it’s discriminatory. For the first time agents of the policy(Congress) had a real chance, yet it was filibustered by Republicans in the U.S. Senate.
If you take time and read about the issue in full you would know what is really at play. The repeal was piggy backed with other legislation unnecessarily by Democrats. Senate majority leader Harry Reid added immigration measures to the bill. For the first time the bill had a fighting chance but stalled 56-43, four votes from being passed. As I looked at the bill and its timing I realize why people don’t trust Washington.
First, the Military should be allowed to police its own. They should do an in-depth study on these policies to see how it affects all branches of the military and the soldiers that are serving; not the people who are not serving. Then from there it should be voted on based on the information the military provides. It should be a unanimous decision.
“But” when politics is involved you get comments like the one from Senator Susan Collins of Maine, “Now is not the time to play politics simply because an election is looming in a few weeks.”
