Remember the 1985 movie Desperately Seeking Susan where Rosanna Arquette plays a surburban housewife who accidentally gets hit on the head, wakes up with amnesia and is mistaken for a free-spirited New York City drifter named Susan played by Madonna. In recent weeks the Obama Presidency seems to be in desperate need of a knock(metaphorically speaking of course ) on the head. From spiraling poll numbers to punishingingly high unemployment numbers to the apperance of having lost their way in one crisis after another. It’s so bad that it threatens to undo what was once so awe-inspiring; so full of hope.

Is it just me or are we all desperatley seeking President Obama. Desperately seeking for him to push back(he should have had his jobs speech when he, not Republicans, wanted)get mad, get fired up and, yes, get all up in the Repubs’ faces. I like that he is cool, calm and collected all the time but the Republicans have taken that coolness as a weakness. This disrespect(Remember when Rep. Joe Wilson(R-S.C.) yelled out “you lie” during the State of the Union Address) started long before the whole debt ceiling debate and the latest dust-up over them not wanting to convene a joint session of Congress to hear the president’s job speech because of Wednesday night’s Republican debate. For the record that was one boring debate, the one on Fox News was much better and I can’t stand Fox News. But that is besides the point because when your leader/boss asks you to do something, you do it for the most part. I mean you wouldn’t jump off a building but you would go in early at his/her request. Republicans simply have no respect for this President and Obama’s attempts to forge bipartisianship only makes them dislike him more.

That dislike is seeping into once ardent Obama supporters who see failings on economy, jobs and the environment and wonder if they can get that “yes we can” Obama back. To be fair the President has been through a lot. He’s been met with non-stop opposition since he took office and when you inherit an economy such as this one you own it for better or worse. As with any President he’s made some missteps but he is not destroying the country as many pundits would have you believe. And those Republicans who are running for the presidency can’t fix this mess either. They will be met with the cold hard reality of Washington gridlock as well. With Obama’s reelection and presidential legacy on the line it’s time he upped the ante and looked strong again like in those days leading up to his historic win. America desperately need it.
