Have adults completely lost their minds and why can’t some of them keep their hands off of children. The latest scandal at Penn State has brought down its football coach, the great Joe Paterno, along with the three other top Penn officials including university president Graham Spanier. All are accused of not doing enough to stop sexual assault of young boys by Paterno’s former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. There are seven known victims with the possibility of more, just as troubling is the children were from socially disadvantaged homes, funneled through Sandusky’s charity( The Second Mile) which was supposed to help them not harm them.
Details in the indictment are hard to read and very explicit but it’s crystal clear that Sandusky has some serious issues and needs help. He’s a pedophile and as such has a psychiatric disorder. But what about those so-called normal folk who knew was going on and swept it under the rug. I’m speaking specfically of the Penn administration who were informed and chose not to contact the authorities. I know they had to sacrifice Paterno in this horrible scandal but he at least did his part in reporting it to his boss whose job it was to take it to authorities and didn’t. The same goes for the graduate student who initially informed Paterno; he did his part too.
Note to parents: You can’t just let anyone have complete access to your kids no matter how famous they are. Remember the Michael Jackson case?
It’s been said that big name college football programs often overshadow the academics of the school and in this case it seems to have overshadowed the moral obligation to do the right thing. This past Saturday saw Penn play for the first time in nearly 46 years without Joe and some fans prayed outside his house while some students rioted on the night he was fired. It’s too bad he didn’t get to leave on his own terms but he’s had a good life(and will continue to) which can’t be said right now for Sandusky’s victims who’s lives have been irreparably damaged. Let’s have a rally for them instead.
