In a more perfect world we have two scenarios: no guns except for law enforcement officials and secondly only responsible gun owners. Let’s see how we can address the scenarios I proposed. The first answer would be the Second Amendment(will speak on this later so humor me for now). We can’t take away rights because someone acts or behaves irresponsibly. The second answer is people who have been committing these heinous crimes have been able to get the proper paperwork to obtain these weapons. The last shooter in Newtown, Connecticut wasn’t able to purchase a weapon on his own, so he borrowed his mother’s weapons that were purchased legally. We have a bit of a conundrum here, is the mother complicit in her sons actions? I dare say “yes” since he shot her in the face. So what now, more gun control? Ask Chicago and Washington D.C., how that is working. Their crime rates are through the roof. My answer is simple, let’s take a look at the laws we do have to see which ones work and which ones don’t. I don’t want more government intrusion. In the long run it hurts both sides both for and against the issue.
As I listened to some of the talking head shows, there are some things I don’t get. First, why would anyone advocate for more guns in order for self- defense ? This kind of thinking defies all logic. We can like our guns, even I enjoy target practice. While serving in the armed forces I was a marksman 39/40. It was there where I got a taste for the devastation and pleasure guns can bring.
I understand the adage of guns don’t kill people but people do. It’s a silly argument, so why bother. The media sensationalized these horrific incidents. The bigger problem is the wrong questions are being asked and the wrong people are being blamed. As much as it pains me to say this, in spite of what happened, the incident shows the importance of a two-parent household. Even if the parents are separated there should always be joint custody: no excuses. It seems the mother had somewhat of a grasp of what behavioral issues her son had yet she was the one to introduce him to guns by taking him to gun ranges. My issue here is, if you had an idea that you your child is socially awkward or peculiar; lock up your guns! Again there was a disconnect, especially for him to shoot his mother in the face four times.
The other side of the argument is since we’ve had these mass killings from the Virginia Tech shooter to the shooter from Colorado, and hell, even the beltway shooter, all who, by the way, legally obtained their weapons. As we all know, you have to apply for the right to obtain a hand gun so that should be the first place we look. Really, for anything to change there will have to be some things people don’t like. The object is not to specifically take rights away from individuals but, in my opinion, to trace the gun back to its owner. The biggest problem is that most gun violence is done by people who obtain them illegally.
A few days ago the National Rifle Association(NRA) held a useless press conference. They blamed the wrong people and industries and although these industries may share some blame, it’s very little. The video games they mentioned such as The God of War is so detached from present reality. It is a game based on Greek mythology, same as Mortal Kombat. Bulletstorm is based in a different future and reality too. The one game with some merit is Grand Theft Auto which is a game about revenge for wrong doing. The other game he mentioned, Kindergarten Killers, is basically unheard of and is so silly and unrealistic. In the game kindergarteners (some with eye patches) all have guns while the janitor and Arnold Schwarzenegger throw barbs at each other.
The NRA isn’t to blame for the shootings, nor are the games or movies but should more be done to help prevent these things from happening? The only problem I see is, it won’t. We live in a free society with rules. Yes, rules should be enforced, starting in the home. Sorry NRA, it’s a bad idea to arm teachers. Most schools already have an on duty officer, even at Virginia Tech they were two on duty officers. The NRA shouldn’t propose an answer without a solution to pay for it. Most Americans don’t want their taxes raised even if it’s for the greater good.
As a gun owner, I like guns but I don’t need 20. I’m not a collector but I do enjoy guitars but if I had 20, some would say that’s to many so I only have four. I believe people can have however many they “legally” can have. There, however, is a sticking point. I’m not a big fan of the outdated document call the Constitution. People talk about it and praise it as if it’s the holy grail of documents. I won’t mention the Fourth Amendment; why bother its been so obliterated. The document allows Congress to steal our money through taxes and eminent domain, where if the government wants to build a road they can take your property. This doesn’t sound like freedom. Now on to what will get the NRA and constitutional lovers alike in hot water. Take some blame NRA, 40% of guns are purchased without background checks. Look the article about gun shows.
A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
This Second Amendment was written to prevent Congress from disarming the state militias. It was to prevent criminal shipment in interstate commerce of sawed-off shotguns. The courts found no evidence these weapons were “to the preservation or efficiency of a well-regulated militia.” Do we have state sponsored militia’s? When I speak of state I’m speaking of the States of the Union. The Supreme Court also never listed the Second Amendment as being one of those provisions of the Bill of Rights that limits the power of the state governments. The state can enact or create any law pertaining to guns they choose. They could bar all gun except for law enforcement. I wonder how constitutional lovers would feel if they actually up held the Constitution?
Don’t worry, since this issue is hot today, next year this time there will be a little mention maybe a shrine but nothing substantial is going to happen pertaining to gun control rights. Anything has to be better than that crap they called an assault weapons ban. For extra safety, buy your kids bullet-proof back packs and bullet proof clothing they will be a big seller in the coming years.
