In the wake of the verdict and after, I pondered many things. First, Trayvon was murdered! I didn’t need all of the facts, I just used simple deduction. He went out for a drink and a snack during the NBA All-Star game. The question I asked first, who will commit a crime during the All-Star game on a Sunday when everyone is home enjoying the game being hosted in their state? People have compared this to the murder of Emmett Till, I say that’s fair. What was the significance of Till’s murder? The funereal home asked the mother of Emmett Till if she wanted an open or closed casket; she responded, “Open, I want the world to see what they did to my son.” Because of the action of a grieving mother she impacted another woman(Rosa Parks). When asked why she didn’t  move to the back of the bus her response was, “I thought of the image of Emmett Till.” History tells us what happened next. The murder of Trayvon can be used to enact legislation such as getting rid of the “Stand your Ground Law” put in by then governor Jeb Bush, due to the lobbying effort of the NRA.

This is an excerpt from Kris Hundley, Susan Taylor Martin and Connie Humburg of  The Tampa Bay Times.

Florida’s “stand your ground” law has allowed drug dealers to avoid murder charges and gang members to walk free. It has stymied prosecutors and confused judges.  It has also served its intended purpose, exonerating dozens of people who were deemed to be legitimately acting in self-defense. Among them: a woman who was choked and beaten by an irate tenant and a man who was threatened in his driveway by a felon.

Seven years since it was passed, Florida’s “stand your ground” law is being invoked with unexpected frequency, in ways no one imagined, to free killers and violent attackers whose self-defense claims seem questionable at best.

Stevie Wonder has said he will not play in states that have the stand your ground laws. This is significant because it is coming from an influence that can hurt local economies and cause other acts to not perform in those states. Simply hearken back to Ray Charles, after releasing the hit “Georgia on my Mind”, Charles was also born in Georgia and  refused to play at Bell Auditorium(this may have been embellished for the movie), students complained about the dance floor being segregated. He did, however, perform there the following year to an integrated Bell Auditorium.

Pay no attention to the ignorant lemmings of  Ted (poop in his pants to avoid serving his country) Nuggent and Mike (I wish I understood popular culture and the Bible and it’s teachings) Huckabee, and a stupid GOP Congressmen. These three miscreants have made some damming statements. I especially hold Huckabee accountable, since he’s a nominal Christian minister. As a sitting congressman, you should never tell anyone to “get over it”. I do have to say this, the media is responsible for shaping the case.  The media can make you look at this anyway they want. Secondly, I like how pics of Trayvon holding guns, tweets about fighting and smoking weed were somehow relevant to him getting shot; especially  about him wearing a hoodie. What about Zimmerman(who currently may have to stand trail for child molestation) wife beater, punching a cop, and being on meds of the night of the confrontation. What was his mental state that night, we will never know since he stood his ground.

Continue to pray, but pray for specifics. Attorney General Eric Holder is already speaking: “Stand Your Ground” and other self-defense laws “sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods.”  The end of this silly law is heavily talked about, and last but not least, when you mess with the money, that speaks louder than anything else. Stop falling into the trap of rich men; racism is a poor man’s game! It is a tactic used to separate races and continue to bring division. Be proud “Black” people, not people of color. Continue doing what’s good and honorable. I know stories will arise of people being killed for Zimmerman stickers, hell, a jazz musician was attacked for a song dedicated to the slain Martin. Media is a BITCH! Look how far we have come since the 60s, and look how much further we have to go. We can also do things that are local: First, go to your neighborhood association meetings so you can understand what’s happening in your neck of the woods. Secondly, start a local protest that’s personal to you. I still personally boycott Shell Gas and all IBM products. I would also like to personally thank Rev. William Barber of North Carolina for mentioning the Martin case at the Moral Monday rally which both The NON-Conformist and Libergirl attended. Lastly, give to the family, prayer doesn’t help with their bills so please give to a reputable organization.

Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The fight for justice against corruption is never easy. It never has been and never will be. It exacts a toll on our self, our families, our friends, and especially our children. In the end, I believe, as in my case, the price we pay is well worth holding on to our dignity.
Frank Serpico

There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.
