Authorities have ruled the death of an inmate at a jail run by a top law enforcement supporter of GOP nominee Donald Trump a homicide caused by “profound dehydration.”

Terrill Thomas, 38, was found dead in a Milwaukee County Jail cell on April 24, nine days after being arrested in connection with a shooting. Other inmates heard Thomas beg for water in the days before he died, the Journal Sentinel reported in July.

The Huffington Post has been tracking jail deaths ― more than 800 ― in the year since Sandra Bland died in a Texas jail on July 13, 2015.

Protests Explode After KKK Plot to Kill Black Men in Florida Prison Is Exposed

Two of the suspects involved were officers at the Florida Department of Corrections.

Last week, the state of Florida arrested three alleged members of the Ku Klux Klan who had plotted to kill an African American inmate after he was released from prison. While white supremacist terror plots are not uncommon, this one had a peculiar twist: two of the suspects involved were officers at the Florida Department of Corrections.

The incident has incited outrage across the state. On Tuesday the Senate Criminal Justice Committee heard testimony from prisons chief Julie Jones, who said she’s unaware of other Klan activity in the prisons, but that it’s difficult to ascertain because the department is not allowed to ask about political affiliations during the hiring process.

The residents of Tallahassee, Florida are not content to live with this uncertainty about extremists working in the Florida prison system. Yesterday, over 100 students and other activists marched from Florida State University to the state capitol, demanding that the government cleanse itself of Klan members and other racist influences. Holding banners reading “Klan Out Now,” the demonstrators carried a Confederate flag which they publicly burned (this week marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War). Rest of the story

Lawmakers Still Back Death Penalty Despite Botched Oklahoma Execution

A bungled execution in Oklahoma in which the condemned prisoner writhed and moaned as he received a lethal injection outraged death-penalty opponents, invited court challenges and attracted worldwide attention.

But the inmate’s agony alone is highly unlikely to change minds about capital punishment in the nation’s most active death-penalty states, where lawmakers say there is little political will to move against lethal injections — and a single execution gone wrong won’t change that.

Oklahoma Rep. Mike Christian, a Republican lawmaker who pushed to have state Supreme Court justices impeached for briefly halting Tuesday’s execution, was unsparing.

“I realize this may sound harsh,” Christian said, “but as a father and former lawman, I really don’t care if it’s by lethal injection, by the electric chair, firing squad, hanging, the guillotine or being fed to the lions.”
