Brain surgery is no match for running HUD, a frustrated Carson says

Before Ben Carson accepted President Donald Trump’s offer to become secretary of housing and urban development, a friend implored him to turn down the job to preserve the reputation he had earned as a brilliant neurosurgeon and lost, in part, as a politician.

The confidant, Logan Delany Jr., who was the treasurer of Carson’s 2016 presidential campaign, described HUD as a “swamp” of “corruption.” He predicted in an email that Carson’s “lack of a background in housing” would make him prey to the department’s career staff and political appointees, as well as predatory lobbyists.

To drive home the point, Delany appended a link toan obituary of Samuel R. Pierce Jr., the Reagan-era HUD secretary whose reputation as a trailblazing black corporate lawyer was tarnished by accusations that he steered contracts to Republican cronies.

Carson’s efforts to steer the agency toward programs that foster self-sufficiency, one of his stated goals, have been undermined by staffing mistakes, his indecisiveness and a president indifferent, at best, to the department’s mission of helping the poor, according to two dozen current and former HUD and administration officials

Trump’s Call for ‘Law and Order’ and Options Facing Black Community in Its Resistance to Police Violence

Donald Trump; Too late to turn off; Primaries

Image: Rolling Stone

In the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement and a national debate over badly needed reforms to the policing of communities of color, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has reintroduced the term “law and order” to the public discussion on the criminal justice system.  Meanwhile, as Trump calls on more police, the Black community is in a dilemma, and is left to ask what it must do to escape police brutality, when everything to date has not worked.

After rolling out his concept at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Trump gave a speech on law and order that was purportedly designed to appeal to African-American voters, with whom he is polling between 0 and 1 percent, according to recent polls. Yet, he made his remarks in West Bend, Wisconsin, 40 miles northwest of Milwaukee, as ABC News reported.  As the most recent Census data show, West Bend is 92 percent white, and has an African-American population of 1.2 percent, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Trump thanked law enforcement for their service, and condemned the recent violence in Milwaukee — impacted by police violence and economic deprivation — as “an assault on the right of all citizens to live in security and peace.”  His answer for the Black community, as he told the nearly all-white crowd, is more police:

Law and order must be restored. It must be restored for the sake of all, but most especially the sake of those living in the affected communities. The main victims of these riots are law-abiding African-American citizens living in these neighborhoods.

Melania Trump’s RNC Speech Follows Michelle Obama’s Nearly Verbatim

In her prime time speech at the Republican National Convention Monday evening, Donald Trump’s wife Melania appeared to lift significant portions from a speech delivered by now-First Lady Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic National Convention where her husband Barack Obama was first nominated for President.

First noticed by Jarrett Hill, here is the relevant segment of Melania Trump’s remarks:

From a young age my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. That your work is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son, and we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them. I am fortunate for my heritage but also for where it brought me today.

A fringe independent candidate for Tennessee’s 3rd Congressional District erected a giant “Make America White Again” billboard this week that he claims was inspired by the signature tagline of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Rick Tyler, the owner of Polk County’s Whitewater Grille and a long shot candidate for Congress, credited Trump’s campaign with creating the environment to advertise such a provocative statement.

Palin’s re-emergence underscores GOP split

If the Republican Party is on the verge of an implosion, Sarah Palin may have been the one who lit the fuse.

Palin’s complicated relationship with GOP leaders over the past eight years is a microcosm of the party’s broader struggles with its most restive members. What started with an embrace by party leaders evolved into wary tolerance, followed by a potentially irreparable split.

So it’s perhaps little surprise that Palin is re-emerging on the national political scene at this moment of reckoning for Republicans.

Palin’s endorsement of Trump is seen as a knock against Cruz, who has been on the rise in Iowa for several weeks. She campaigned for Cruz when he ran for the Senate in 2012, and he’s said her support was instrumental in his victory.

At a Donald Trump rally on Friday, two protesters from North Carolina gained worldwide attention.

Rose Hamid, a Muslim woman from Charlotte, and Marty Rosenbluth, an attorney from Durham, still have the yellow stars they wore to the rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

“My goal going in was to be as respectful as possible,” said Hamid.

They said they stood in place as the presidential candidate spoke about the current White House and radical Islam. Hamid and Rosenbluth were escorted out and, on way to the door, Hamid said a Trump supporter yelled at her.

“He was in my face, and he was saying ‘Do you have a bomb? Do you have a bomb with you,’” said Hamid. “I kept a smile on my face and I said ‘No, I do not have a bomb. Do you have a bomb?’”
