A jilted ex-boyfriend is behind at least eight of the scores of threats made against Jewish Community Centers nationwide, plus a bomb threat to New York’s Anti-Defamation League, in an effort to harass and vilify his former girlfriend, federal officials said Friday.

Juan Thompson, 31, was arrested in St. Louis and will appear in federal court in Missouri on Friday afternoon on a charge of cyberstalking, authorities said. There was no information on an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Federal officials have been investigating 122 bomb threats called in to nearly 100 Jewish Community College schools, child care and other similar facilities in three dozen states. The first wave of calls started January 9. Thompson made threats in his name and in the woman’s name, and his first one was Jan. 28 to the Jewish History Museum in Manhattan, authorities said. Federal authorities say Thompson made up an email address to make it seem like the woman was sending threats in his name. He made threats this way to Jewish schools in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and Manhattan and to a JCC in Manhattan, authorities said.

He also made threats in the woman’s name, authorities said. An email sent February 21 to the Anti-Defamation League said the woman was behind threats made against “jews,” authorities said.

“She lives in nyc and is making more bomb threats tomorrow,” the email said, according to federal authorities.

Sheriff to Oregon protest holdouts: ‘There doesn’t have to be bloodshed’

Federal and state authorities said Wednesday the shooting death of one protester and arrest of 8 others who had occupied a federal wildlife refuge came after futile efforts to end the standoff peacefully for 25 days.

“Instead, they have chosen to threaten and intimidate the America they profess to love and through their criminal actions bring these consequences upon themselves,” said Greg Bretzing, FBI special agent in charge.

In a particularly emotional statement before reporters, Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward spoke directly to the remaining half-dozen holdouts at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Ore., which has been occupied since Jan. 2.

Oregon cop and his family face death threats for denouncing racist police chief

A white US police officer who turned in his chief for allegedly making a series of racist slurs in reaction to a black woman’s complaint said he fears for his life.

Officer Alex Stone, of the small city of Clatskanie, in the western state of Oregon, said he and fellow officer Zack Gibson decided to come forward in August after watching “in complete bewilderment” as their police chief, Martin Hoover, pounded on his chest and howled like a monkey while being briefed about a complaint by a black suspect.

“We were just completely at a loss for words,” Stone said Wednesday. “I was raised to believe that everyone is created in God’s image… and I won’t tolerate anyone, especially if they are in power, treating people as if they are less than human.”

He said when he expressed surprise at Hoover’s reaction, telling him that the woman filing the complaint had been injured, the chief said: “That’s what they deserve.”

Stone told AFP that he has received death threats from the local community and been racially abused since he and Gibson filed a complaint earlier this summer.

“Just yesterday one of the local business owners said he wanted to take me into the woods and shoot me in the head. Another said he wanted to string me up by a noose,” said the 36-year-old officer. “People are emailing me saying they hope I get shot in the head.”

“My wife got run off the road twice… and my three children are scared,” he added. “I feel like people are telling me to leave.”

The case comes amid a renewed debate in the United States over race relations and police violence.

Protests have erupted in several cities across the country in recent months, touched off by perceived police brutality against unarmed black men or women.

– Eroding trust? –

Martin Hoover was placed on paid administrative leave after the complaint and retired soon afterwards, receiving praise from the city for his services.

In a letter to the local paper last week, mayor Diane Pohl thanked Hoover “for a job well done.”

“Just take it easy on the elk, bear and fish that you will have more time to pursue,” she added.

Mat dos Santos, of the American Civil Liberties Union in Oregon, which helped Stone with his complaint, said the case highlighted growing distrust of the police.

“Right now, public trust in the police is very low based on all these incidents that have taken place across the country and this incident widens the chasm between police and the communities they serve,” he said.

“The public wants to believe that there are good officers out there, that not every officer is a bad apple and what this chief did further erodes public trust in the police.”

Stone said that while fellow police officers in Clatskanie, home to about 2,000 residents, and across the country have voiced support for his actions, he has faced a backlash from the community and city officials.

“Not one city official has contacted me or my family to see if we are OK,” he said.

Still, he said he did not regret filing the complaint.

“I want people to understand that the majority of police officers are not racist,” he said. “We really do care about everybody.

“This person (Hoover) does not reflect the majority of police officers.”

Neither Hoover nor city officials could be immediately reached for comment.

Despite saving wounded Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell in Afghanistan and helping ‘Lone Survivor’ make tens of millions in profits at the box office, Mohammad Gulab is struggling to protect his family from an endless stream of Taliban attacks.

In 2005, the rural village dweller lived in a small town in the mountainous Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan, along the contentious border with Pakistan. While in the wilderness near his home, Gulab discovered the severely wounded Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell. Shot in the leg and suffering from fractures in three vertebrae, Luttrell desperately needed water and medical care after his unit was involved in a firefight with the Taliban. He was the sole survivor from his unit of four.

An ethnic Pashtun, Gulab felt obliged to help the stranger, and carried him to his home where he was given shelter, food, water, and medical attention. Also given was protection from the Taliban, who knew Luttrell was being sheltered in the village, but could not find out where, thanks to the tight-lipped attitude of residents.

A villager eventually snuck past fighters guarding the area to deliver a hand-written note to a US military base. When commanders had possession of the message with the location of Luttrell, they dispatched helicopters and soldiers to retrieve the wounded solider.

Armatix is already selling the personalized weapons in Europe and Asia.

In an interview published by The New York Times on Monday, Padilla explained what happened when a forum of online “gun enthusiasts” published her cellphone number.

Dustup could hurt Michael Grimm’s reelection

New York Rep. Michael Grimm was already facing a tough reelection. His post-State of the Union blowup could make it even tougher.

A moderate Republican who represents a swing Staten Island district, Grimm has been atop Democratic target lists for months. National Democratic strategists have been talking up the idea of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to unseat the second-term congressman. They want to hit the airwaves with TV ads casting him as a tea party figure who’s too conservative for his district.

Grimm’s altercation with a reporter who asked the congressman about a federal investigation of his campaign finances instantly went viral – footage played in an endless loop on cable TV and garnered hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube.
