Russia’s Favored Outlet Is an Online News Giant. YouTube Helped.

When the state-backed Russian news channel RT became the first news organization to surpass one billion views on YouTube in 2013, it marked the achievement with a retrospective of its most popular videos and a special guest — one of the Google-owned site’s senior executives.

Robert Kyncl, a YouTube vice president who has since become its chief business officer, joined an RT anchor in a studio, where he praised RT for bonding with viewers by providing “authentic” content instead of “agendas or propaganda.”

But now, as investigators in Washington examine the scope and reach of Russian interference in United States politics, the once-cozy relationship between RT and YouTube is drawing closer scrutiny.

YouTube — the world’s most-visited video site, owned by one of the most powerful and influential corporations in America — played a crucial role in helping build and expand RT, an organization that the American intelligence community has described as the Kremlin’s “principal international propaganda outlet” and a key player in Russia’s information warfare operations around the world.

Palin Skirts The ‘Media Filters’ With Launch Of Her Digital Video Channel

“Tired of media filters? Well, so am I,” the former Republican vice presidential nominee wrote in an announcement on her Facebook page. “So, let’s go rogue together and launch our own member-supported channel! This will be OUR channel, for you and for me, and we’ll all get to call it like it is.”

The Sarah Palin Channel, described in its formative stages as “a video version of her Facebook page,” costs $9.95 per month or $99.95 for a yearly subscription through Tapp, an online video service founded by former NBC Universal and CNN executives. Active military members can subscribe to the network free of charge.

Fracking hot: N. Dakota man ‘sets tap water on fire’

A video made by a man from North Dakota shows him cautiously holding a lighter up against the stream of water coming out of his tap, prompting large flames to rise up into the faucet. North Dakota has been home to a fracking boom over the past few years.

“First time I did it, it was a huge fireball [that] took up the entire sink – so that’s why I’m a little jumpy doing it. I don’t want to blow up the bathroom here,” he laughed during the demonstration. A huge flame shot up as the running water appeared to catch alight.

“Really weird, right?” he questioned as he switched the camera off. The video has had over 400,000 views. It was only uploaded within the last three weeks, garnering attention on a global scale. The video prompted one commenter to note sarcastically that there was “nothing like a refreshing glass of fire.”

In a 46-second video posted on YouTube Friday afternoon, Paula Deen offered up an apology for using “inappropriate, hurtful language.” This comes after she failed to show up for a scheduled interview on TODAY to discuss her admission that she’s used racial slurs in the past.

“I want to apologize to everybody for the wrong that I’ve done, and I want to learn and grow from this,” Deen says in the heavily edited video. “Inappropriate, hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, but I beg you, my children, my team, my fans, my partners, I beg for your forgiveness. Please forgive me for the mistakes that I’ve made.”
