Amid all the controversy about the Islamic community center near Ground Zero there is actually something happening on the spot where the 9/11 attacks occurred. It’s long overdue construction and lots of it. According to the New York Times about 2,000 construction workers are on the job, weekends included, and the great square voids where the twin towers stood are fully formed and almost entirely clad in granite. Giant water pumps are on stand-by to send thousands of gallons of water cascading into the voids creating what memorial officials say will be the largest human-engineered waterfalls in the United States. The pace has, perhaps, picked up because we’re approaching the 10th anniversary(2011) of the attacks and it would have been politically unsavory to not have a permanent memorial after so many years.
