I’m really fascinated by John Chavis, he was an educator but what really attracts me to him even more is that I attended school right near a park named for him. Crosby-Garfield School in Raleigh, North Carolina was in a pretty terrible neighborhood but right next door to Crosby was Chavis Park, named for Chavis. The most embarrassing thing about this is I was never taught about this man in school. The only reason I even know about him is quite funny. I was furniture shopping in the early 90s and noticed a book among the decor featuring him. I asked the salesperson if I could have the book entitled A Guide To Negro History in America by Phillip T. Drotning, he obliged and the rest is history. Read his story below.
