“The week before this went down, Jonathan Martin texted me on my phone, [saying], ‘I will murder your whole effing family,’” Incognito said. “Now, did I think Jonathan Martin was going to murder my family? Not one bit. I knew it was coming from a brother. I knew it was coming from a friend. I knew it was coming from a teammate.”

For reasons that may be up for debate, Martin’s lawyer, David Cornwell, tweeted out what he claims is the same “text”(warning, strong language) that Incognito referenced:

Does that prove that Martin was complicit in a rather over-the-top line of jokes with Incognito? If so, it’s hard to figure out why Cornwell would release it to the public.

So, perhaps the motivation here was to take any possible edge off that Incognito comment — even though Incognito said he did not believe Martin was “going to murder my family,” that he brought it up at all might have painted Martin in a more negative light.

No matter why Cornwell tweeted out the image, it’s just another odd twist in a story that doesn’t seem like it will go away any time soon.
