Southern California fast food workers Thursday staged a walkout as part of their attempt to raise the the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.
The protest, the second since August, is organized by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and was designed to pressure Congress to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25, or about $15,000 annually.
Workers say many have to work second jobs and use public assistance to make ends meet.
“It’s very hard because I don’t work that many hours because they’re being taken away from me or I am not being scheduled enough to support myself and I’m making only 15 to 20 hours a week,” Simon Rojas said.
The strike is not getting backing from the White House as President Barack Obama said last month he will only support a minimum wage raise to $10.10 per hour.
The National Restaurant Association said Thursday’s walkout is a PR campaign where a majority of participants are activists rather than fast food employees.

You know, snorts, I was going to write how I feel about this situation and I deleted it. 🙂 It’s probably better that way. XOXO – Bacon
do tell, pig love, what do you think?
Snorts – Okay, remember you asked for it – double snorts.
Let me get on my tall pig box. 1st off = wasn’t fast food restaurants once upon a time a place where high school kids worked, kids in college, retiree’s or people working part time jobs. Is it really a job that you are looking at for a ‘career’ to support your family. You know what I mean.
2nd off = You’re not making enough money to support your family by working at fast food. What happened to working an EXTRA job to make ends meet? I know my humans both did two jobs for many, MANY years to pay what they needed.
3rd off = $15.00 bucks an hour?! Really – are you kidding me? Do you know how many years my humans had to work in their “CAREERS” to work to the top to make that much money? How many years of college it took and you at fast food want to start at the top?
4th off = Can you work at actually wanting to be ‘at work’, take pride in what you do and get the orders right. Then we can talk about a SLIGHT increase but nothing like $15.00.
//rant over – getting off of my piggy rant box//

My husband calls me a bleeding heart liberal but I agree with all of your points. Yes..work your way up to 15.00 but start off like that is a bit much I do agree. I’ve worked two jobs to make ends meet and all the while I was working on a getting a degree which for me opened many more doors. Just saying. The job market is bad but if work at your fast food place..i’m trying to move up to manager because I hear they make good money. thanks for sharing!
I know – I know – I get on my pig box at times. Mom/dad had this same discussion this morning. They both worked their way through college and two jobs – even after they get married before they adopted me. Life *is* hard – we all agree to that. But, whatever happened to working your way up through the ranks, right? XOXO – Bacon
