Black Jesus: We Have Other Things to Boycott

TIME

I had been hearing rumblings for a couple weeks, but Thursday morning I awoke to a full-throttle meltdown among some members of the community with which I most closely identify, that is, Black Christians. Thursday night the new series by Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder premiered on AdultSwim, the Cartoon Network evening lineup of adult-themed cartoon comedy. It’s called Black Jesus, and in the trailer the title character is depicted as a neighborhood brother dressed in church-play biblical garb with no place to lay his head and apparently getting little to no respect despite the fact that he is, as he himself notes, “your Lord and Savior.” It has the potential to be very funny, that is, if you don’t see it as blasphemous.

Let me admit that the name Black Jesus immediately causes me to chuckle because it evokes the memory of an iconic episode of the controversial 1970s…

Michael Dunn Trial: Is America’s Legal System Capable of Defending Black Life Against Irrational White Fears?

“Sis, c’mon, dis Brooklyn Winter Olympics!” I’m sitting in a car in backed up traffic, watching two young black boys and their sister turn treacherous sidewalks into an icerink and the slopes of Sochi – their own personal Winter Olympics. They laugh, slide, create shapes, do commentary, scrunch up their faces, dance, slip, right themselves and do it over again. I laugh thinking about how irritated we all are by the ice. I laugh thinking how irritated we all are by the ice, but how kids take adult things and through their lens see and make magic, create a wonderland. The older brother declares he won the gold medal, slides dramatically to his knees, puts his arms in the air and starts his thank you speech: “First I’ma thank God that I I didn’t break my lil black butt on this crazy ice….” His younger brother and sister crack up laughing and start applauding. They then begin to argue about who gets the silver and bronze medals. As I watch, I start to imagine Jordan Davis as a kid–Trayvon Martin, too. I wonder about the games they played, their dreams, what medals they might have won or claimed in childhood games. I see the faces of Jordan’s mama, Trayvon’s mama and the worlds they must confront in which their 18 and 19 year old sons are now corpses and names on the tongues of a nation–high profile examples of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” laws.??

Fox Business host: Maybe ‘something about the female brain’ makes women bad tech CEOs

Fox Business host: Maybe ‘something about the female brain’ makes women bad tech CEOs (via Raw Story )

Fox Business host Stuart Varney on Monday addressed the lack of women executives in the technology industry by suggesting that there was “something about the female brain” that deterred companies from hiring them. Early last month, filings for Twitter’s

plan to publicly offer shares showed that the company was dominated by male executives.

“Should tech companies feel obligated to put women on the board or to make women top executives just to be politically correct,” Varney asked the Tea Party News Network’s Scottie Hughes on Monday.

“No business should ever be obligated to bring on a woman,” Hughes insisted. “They should want to, but you’re not seeing this in Silicon Valley for some reason.”

“But why is that?” Varney wondered. “It’s a very difficult question to ask because it’s politically incorrect. Is there something about the female brain that is a deterrent for getting on board with tech? Is there?”

ACLU: Judge Can’t Change Child’s Name From Messiah

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is crying foul at a Tennessee judge who ordered last week that a 7-month-old boy’s name be changed from “Messiah” to “Martin.”

Jaleesa Martin and the father of Messiah attended a child support hearing last Thursday in Cocke County, Tenn. to settle a dispute over their child’s last name. But Child Support Magistrate Lu Ann Ballew rendered a judgment on the first name as well, ruling that the boy can go by “Martin DeShawn McCullough” to encompass the mother and father’s name. Ballew told TV station WBIR that the “word Messiah is a title and it’s a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ.”

Hedy Weinberg, head of the ACLU in Tennessee, told USA Today that Ballew “does not have the right to impose that faith on others.” Weinberg said the ACLU will offer to provide assistance to Martin, who has said she will challenge the ruling.

“Messiah” was one of the five fastest growing male baby names between 2011 and 2012, according to the Social Security Administration.

New Bond Hearing Scheduled George Zimmerman

George Zimmerman has been given a new bond hearing, tentatively scheduled for June 29, reports CBS affiliate WKMG in Orlando. The former neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing Florida teen Trayvon Martin will now sit in jail for at least a few more weeks. Mark O’Mara, Zimmerman’s attorney, told WKMG he is preparing to file a new motion for the hearing.

Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty in the 17-year-old’s death, returned to custody on Sunday, two days after his $150,000 bond was revoked. Prosecutors argued Zimmerman and his wife misled a judge about how much money they had to put up for the bond.

What is Wrong with This Picture?

By now you’ve heard about Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was shot to death by a self-appointed community watchman named George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. First, how did this happen in this day and age, not the shooting but that the shooter was seemingly given a pat on the back, his gun returned to him and sent on his merry way with a smile. What the Hell! Even trained officers of the law who shoot with reason are often put on desk duty until an investigation can be conducted. Again…what the hell, you just let this guy go because he cited some crazy ass Florida self-defense law. At best he should have been brought in for questioning, at worst kept overnight just because it didn’t all add up.

As more details come out about the case I’m disturbed by the 911 tapes and that this poor child was left for three days at the medical examiner’s office. Did they not even think to go through his cell phone and try to contact family members who were frantic. Oh wait it was just some thug black kid wearing a hoodie, who gives a darn. Since when did hoodies become evil, what’s next sweatshirts and where is his cellphone? As pictures of Trayvon show up all over the internet and on television, the sense of a life taken stupidly and senselessly makes my head spin. How could this happen and why hasn’t that loser/stalker Zimmerman been arrested? He’s a LOSER because he shot an innocent and unarmed child and who rides around patrolling their neighborhood with a gun, who does that? That’s the so-called job of the police.

Yesterday a neighbor came to Zimmerman’s defense saying he was no Rambo and boo hoo hoo there had been a bunch of robberies by black males over the last year and he(Zimmerman) was just freaking fed up. I am in no way defending males of any race of committing robbery but you just CANNOT go out killing folks who may look suspicious. Excuses, excuses.

Zimmerman whose ethnicity is Hispanic and white family says he’s can’t be a racist because he grew up in a multicultural setting but I take exception to that because his skin and hair is such that he can NOT be identified by the color of his skin, in other words he looks white enough, albeit barely. In his dark heart he was racist though, chasing down some kid for no reason other than walking while black. It’s shameful and I hope the now opened investigations result in his arrest.

Last but not least, I’m glad that people pushed back on this murder and took to alternative methods(social media) to get the word out. Also black media deserves credit for first covering the story. The dam of all the ugliness that surrounds Trayvon’s killing has been opened and I hope it overflows until justice is done.
