It’s official, I think John McCain has lost it. This past Saturday during the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” debate he had a “get off of my lawn moment“…on the floor of the U.S. Senate, storming in from the cloakroom, hiking up his pants and yelling at two of his colleagues and interrupting one who had the floor in the debate. He ended his bizarre tirade against the 17-year-old ban by equating its repeal with members of the military losing limbs. Now that is a whole can of crazy for you and a reversal on the part of McCain, remember he was for repealing “DADT” before he was against it.
Back in 2006 McCain said that if the military brass came to him and said the policy should be changed then he would support changing it. In comes said “military brass” in the form of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen. Both said they would work with Congress and the President to repeal the ban but you know that was just not enough for McCain. He said he would await the results of a study on the issue commissioned by the Pentagon.
The study came out this November and cited low risk on military effectiveness if the repeal is overturned, not good enough for the old man who labeled the study flawed and pressed for hearings on the topic. Is this the same man who said he would support it once the military signaled they wanted it to end? Dana Milbank of the Washington Post summed it up beautifully; his antipathy toward the President has made him a hardliner. He did the same thing while George W. Bush was in office and it made him seem all the more a “maverick” when really he was just bitter about NOT being President. In this lame-duck session of Congress he can be proud of being against just about everything and coming off like a sore loser who is fast becoming the poster child for term-limits.
