Our long national nightmare is over; Glenn Beck signed off from his final Fox News show with his usual paranoia saying,“But for those members of the media who are celebrating: I’ve waited for a season, I know exactly where I’m going and you will pray for the time when I was only on the air for one hour every day.”

He reportedly slinked across the street after the final episode to begin recording his new show which will be web-based and fee-based. How’s that for you Glenn Beck fans, he’s going to make you pay for his content. Well at least he didn’t cry on the last show.

He’s right though people are celebrating and not just in the media, your poor grandparents can now stop hiding in the closet after watching his show. For over two-years Glenn stoked fear and paranoia to huge ratings; around 3 million viewers per night in early 2010.  He said outrageous things like “Fall to your knees and thank God for Fox News. Pray for Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch. Pray for them. Pray for strength and spine,” and “Find the exit closest to you and prepare for a crash landing, because this plane is coming down, because the pilot is intentionally steering it into the trees. Most likely it will happen sometime after Christmas.”

I wonder what he what have to say about his boss who is now embroiled in a hacking scandal.

The list of paranoid statements like above is long.

To the average person his statements sound crazy but night after night of listening would drive anyone to buy freeze-dried food(for the apocalypse), gold coins and Shirley Temple DVDs.  It wasn’t always such a grade B list of advertisers but Beck being Beck ran away his best advertisers with crazy talk such as saying President Obama had a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture. What? Obama can’t win, either he’s not black enough or he’s not white enough.

Even though Fox issued a statement distancing themselves from his statement Beck continued to spew craziness and advertisers began to take notice. They no longer wanted their products associated with hate and fear mongering and quite possibly those crazy chalk boards. They dropped him in large numbers, you know it’s bad when Proctor and Gamble pulls out of your show. Color of Change is credited with putting the word out to their members who put pressure on advertisers in the form of  a petition that at least 173,000 signed. It was downhill from there because soon viewers bailed and with them went his ratings. Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes may be the defacto mouthpieces of the “Right” but profit is the bottom line in the Fox empire and Beck  had to be dismissed even if they agreed with his crazy rantings. Beck may well reinvent himself and show up on a television station near you but Fox may well have been his last stop on the crazy train.
