If I hear one more conservative politician say that a certain segment(poor people) of the population aren’t paying any taxes, I might have to smack someone.  My partner the NON-Conformist better watch out. But all jokes aside, as of late, this has been a constant and NON-stop talking point of the “Right”.  According to them, this close to 50 percent of losers are cheating the government and the other 50 is picking up the tab. Turns out it’s just not true. Taxes are not in a vacuum and only applied to your income and nothing else. We pay taxes on just about everything. One of my favorite political blogs Talking Points Memo sums it up perfectly…

What’s really going on here is that about 47 percent of households paid no federal income tax in 2009. Either they owed nothing, or they got as much back from the federal government as they paid — or more. This ignores payroll taxes, state and local taxes, gas taxes, excise taxes and much more. But to hear conservatives talk about it, you’d think these people’s entire tax burden was $0.00

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities writes on this widely misunderstood concept, charts and graphs included.
